Things You Should Know about IBS (Part 2)

When I was young I had bouts of stomach ache and bloating that usually occurred early in the morning or late nights. The doctor in the family, my grandmother, prescribed hot-water compress on my stomach. If that didn’t work, she had me take a very bitter laxative.

Over the years I learned how to keep away from things which, I suspect, caused them. Unless I am to deliver a speech, which was always preceded by severe stomach cramps or have an occasional diarrhea from bad food, I knew not what IBS is.

Of course, probably due to ignorance or the word didn’t exist then, I simply didn’t know that what I had were IBS episodes.

Anyway, this post is not to give a historical account of my stomach problems but to underscore the fact that IBS can be treated the doctor’s way or grandma’s way.

Here are few of them.

Medical remedies:

There’s good news and bad news re treatment of IBS, medically. The bad news is that there is no treatment for IBS, per se. The good news is its symptoms can be treated.

There are medications for constipation and diarrhea. To control colon muscle spasms and reduce abdominal pain, antispasmodics are sometimes recommended as well as antidepressants to relieve some symptoms.

However, both drugs, antispasmodics and antidepressants, can worsen constipation making it necessary to use other drugs to relax bladder and intestinal muscles.

Consult your physician who knows best.

Natural remedies:

If you are averse in the use of drugs, you can opt for natural medications to treat your irritable bowel syndrome.

My grandma’s natural cure for my stomach problems will not be very handy in the busy world of today. It’s not easy to be pressing hot-water bottles against your tummy while going about your day’s activities.

There are several books devoted to the natural treatment of IBS. One such book, The Secrets to Curing Irritable Bowel Syndrome by Kelly Parks-Hoffman, tops the best-seller list in Clickbank.

It is a product of long years of study in the use of natural remedies, not only for IBS, but of the holistic approach to wellness.

In a world hungry for green technology, this is a good reference material for the natural treatment of your IBS.

Self-help remedies:

In a general sense, you can do your share by watching your diet and your stressors.

Stressors are events, things, situations and circumstances that stress you out.

Stress stimulates the colon spasms in people with IBS. Like the heart and the lungs, the colon is partly controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which responds to stress.

This explains my severe stomach cramps before delivering a speech.

Some evidence suggests that IBS is also affected by the immune system which, in turn, is affected by stress. I am sure that you know that stress can engender a lot of other medical ailments; and it is one of the major killers, world-wide.

If your IBS is wearing you down, check if your stress level is wearing you out.

If you are not as tight as a guitar string, check your diet.

A lot of food that we eat greatly contributes to whatever stomach problems we have.

This year I checked into a hospital in two separate occasions. he first was for severe constipation and, in the second, for diarrhea that almost dried me out. . Both situations were food-related.

Consult your nutritionist to see what food types suit you best.

No treasure is more precious than our overall wellness. IBS, though not life-threatening as it is, can severely affect your day, your life, your happiness and  fitness.

Dreams Can Mean Something or Nothing

We all dream dreams. There is hardly any person, alive, without a dream story, one time or recurring, to tell. As varied they may be, they all boil down to one question, “What does it mean?”

Interpreting dreams, however, can be more entertaining than certain. To start with, defining the word “dream” and understanding the reasons why we dream are areas best left to people who have devoted much time studying the subject.

Some of these people are found in The Academy of Dreams. Their information about dreams and dreaming can give you several sleepless (and dreamless) nights. For starters, they categorize dreams or dreaming into scientific, lucid, Toltec, Jungian, etc.

If that is too much for you, settle for this less cerebrally-demanding definition of the word:

“A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations that occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.” – Wikipedia.

However, why we dream and what they mean has been a constant topic of scientific speculation, philosophical intrigue and religious skullduggery.

Dreams you should be interested in:

One of my recurring dreams is to be able to fly like a bird. I thought it means that I am destined to be a pilot until my Mom shot me down when I tried to enroll into the air force’s flying academy. She didn’t want me in those flying coffins.

I still have it, occasionally, but never give it much thought until I came across a Divine Caroline article about the connection of dreams and dream symbols with stress.

You may brush aside your dreams but never stress. It is still one of the leading causes of death worldwide and must avoid stressors without getting stressed out.

Here they are:

Being nude:

This is one of my recurring dreams. Though perplexing, I never let it bother me. Maybe I should, now. Nudity dreams could mean:

-    A possible relationship scandal or unwise engagement;

-    Constant feelings of vulnerability, shame, inferiority at work or being in an unguarded or exposed position.

Storm dreams:

-   An internal storm in your life; an overwhelming struggle, shock, devastating loss and personal catastrophe;

-     Continued sickness, business downturns and separation from friends and things that could cause great distress.

Dreams of crashes:

-    Represent deep anxieties and fears;

-    Of feelings that your life is headed for a disaster;

-    An airplane crash may be caused by unmet highly unrealistic goals while car crashes, of painful experience.

Dreams of hell:

-    Could mean you are suffering from an inescapable situation;

-    Inner fears and repressed guilty feelings;

-    Dreaming of fires is not necessarily about hell but of destruction, passion, desire, illumination, transformation, enlightenment or anger.

Dreams of death:

Dying at age 45 is one of my three recurring dreams. You can just imagine the suspense I had as I approached the age.

I am now 63 years old and feel I can live another 63.

Death dreams, according to experts, are largely symbolic of things to come.

They could mean the beginning of suspense in your life, of trials or forthcoming finalities like the end of marriage or a career.

For most men, erectile dysfunction starts at around age 45.

We have countless dreams and their interpretations will remain hidden and mysterious to most of us. For entertainment or should your interest get the better of you, visit Dream Moods.

Foods to Go Easy With

Has anybody in your family, a loved one, been stricken by a stroke?

My wife had, six years ago (two years before she died of cardiac arrest). We all have unforgettable experiences. That, etched deeply in my soul, was one of mine.

There she was, limp as a doll, lying on a dirty ER bed, muttering something intelligible, and I, keeping her awake  by giving her a little slap each time she closed her eyes, fearing that I may lose her forever.

A stroke occurs two ways: Ischemic if a clot obstructs a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain, hemorrhagic, when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain. Ischemic stroke accounts for 80% of all stroke cases and strokes, in total, is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

There are no specific causes of strokes but there are risk factors. Oddly, my wife  had none of these when it happened. When she recovered from her slurred speech, she told me that heat of the noon day sun and her haste to keep our appointment probably started it.

What she left out, or forgot, was that days earlier, she feasted on fried pork skin.

Yes, the foods we eat become risk factors if they contribute to an increase in blood pressure and cholesterol levels. So next time you go on an eating binge, think twice before you indulge on these:

Crackers, chips and grocery pastries and baked products:

These food items are high in trans fat, also called hydrogenated fat. Commercial bakers love them because they stay solid at room temperature, foregoing the need for refrigeration.

How I love potato chips; to feel its salty crispiness against my tongue and feel it crackle in my mouth. But they are nasty in blocking arteries, increasing blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels while decreasing the good cholesterol.

Smoked and processed meats:

Convenience, which these foods offer, can unwittingly do us harm. It is so easy to dine on nothing much but canned goods, a can opener and microwave oven.

Careful though. These foods are packed with sodium nitrate and nitrite, which have been shown to damage blood vessels and cause arteries to harden and narrow. They have also been linked to coronary artery disease.

Diet soda:

Started by weight-watchers, this has become popular even among those without weight problems as a hedge against diabetes and those wanting to “belong.”

But beware! A study by Colombia University (reported at the American Stroke Association’s 2011 International Conference) showed that people 40 yrs and older, have 60% more strokes, heart attacks and coronary heart disease among those who take a daily dose of diet soda than those who didn’t.

The jury is still out at press time so the reason for this sordid finding is still up for deliberation.

Red meat:

Ooopppss! All this while I thought eating red meat was healthy.

Well, think about this. Researchers have long found out that the saturated fat in red meat contributes to strokes and heart disease by building up protein plaques, resulting to clogged arteries.

Canned soup and prepared foods:

Another invention of modernity ever pressed for time. To make them taste better and remain fresher for long periods of time they are loaded with sodium.

Sodium raises blood pressure, the primary causative factor for strokes. Studies have shown that people who consume more than 4,000 mg of sodium daily have double the risk of strokes compared to those consuming less.

If we look at things closely, there is always a trade-off in everything. We lose weight but we expose ourselves to the risk of strokes and other ailments.

I am currently taking Tylenol to ease the pain of osteoarthritis. This pill belongs to the acetaminophen family, a very nasty drug for liver health. To mitigate its harmful effects, I only take it on days when I play tennis.

I don’t have any hang-ups with the foods I eat. Nor would I deny myself the pleasure of eating the foods that I like. But I eat just to fill a hunger, not to burst my seams like many others do.

If you want to stay healthy and fit, exercise moderation in all things. Going beyond that which is healthy can kill you.

What Turns a Woman Off

March 31st, 2011

I used to work with a guy who was super successful with girls. Our receptionist was kept busy talking calls from girls wanting to talk to him Still, after a couple of months in the job, she, too, dated him. The guy has got everything a girl can go crazy for,  i.e., good looks, smooth at flirty conversation, and a father who bought him the latest car and memberships in expensive clubs.

But he’s a rarity. You and I are ordinary mortals who have to work real hard to date the girl of our dreams, or, any girl for that matter. According to dating specialists, we have to work against some physical and character aspects that turn women off. These are:

Physical aspects:

No, this has nothing to do with physical stature but on things such as:

-   Body odor is considered the primary turn-off factor among women. No amount of dressing up or personality can compensate for the bad effect of body odor on women.

-   Bad breath spoils the pleasure of a passionate kiss. What a difference a mouth wash could have made.

-   Yellow teeth mar the magic of a warm and winsome smile on a woman. Small things, like brushing one’s teeth, can spell the difference between a turn on or a turn off.

-   Untidy attire like torn or battered jeans, dirty or unkempt shirt. Even worse are multi-colored pants, stained shirt or those with skid marks. Dressing up is an outer manifestation of what is inside of a person,

Character aspects:

Most women would aver that they prefer a man with character over that with good looks.  Don’t press them further for they very hazy with what it means. Definitely, they are turned-off by men who:

-   Forget their names. A person’s name is his most precious intangible asset. Forgetting the name is like forgetting the person. Men who chase skirts will ultimately mixed their names up.

-   Lying to a woman is the surest way not to get laid. A little exaggeration or hyperbole to lighten up the conversation is good but lying to get into her good graces is like digging a grave with your teeth.

-   Men should know the difference between confidence and arrogance. Confident men turn women on. Arrogance turns them off faster than a faucet. Unfortunately men take character lessons hardly or not at all.

-   Rubbing her the wrong way like an inappropriate remark on her weight, her dress or the way she looks. Every woman is a pride unto herself. Prop it up and you get her going. If you can’t then keep away from her.

-   Insensitivity to her body language. Some women are not too direct and leave it to the men to interpret their desires. She need not say “I want to go,” loudly for the man get up and take her home.

-   Bad table manners like eating with a mouthful, eating like a pig, slurping a soup, spilling gravy, etc., turn women off. If you are like that, forget a second dinner date.

Better Relationship and Sex

February 21st, 2011

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

An Americanized Indian was asked the difference between Indian and American movies. He said, “In Indian movies, a boy meets girl. The next scene they are singing love songs together. In American movies, a boy meets girl. The next scene, they are in bed making love.

I am a baby boomer. When I was young, it was said that a relationship is formed once a girl accepted a suitor. These days, a relationship is when they had sex together.

Ethnicity and generation gaps aside, sex is a key part of a relationship. And close relationships make people feel happy; they share, talk to each other and do things to and for each other. The following are some of the answers to the question regarding the importance of sex in building a good relationship:

o    Sex is a very pleasurable experience and is good thing to have in a relationship;

o    Sex is an important part of a relationship but if it is, or it becomes the most important aspect, then there is no “real” relationship;

o    After sex, both partners’ brains release chemicals that make them feel happy and. most importantly, connected and in love.

Important as it is in a relationship, yet it is a conversation topic most people shy away from, especially from their own partners. Word-wide, it is estimated that roughly 40% of men and woman have one or several forms of sexual dysfunction, i.e., hang-ups about their bodies, inability to have sex or other deep-rooted sexual problems. .

Sex does help build better relationships in ways we never knew before. Consider these:

o    People with healthy sex relationships generally have upbeat mental and physical state of being. This is especially true to married couples who outright attest to the fact that their marriage is kept soaring due to higher levels of intimacy.

Regular satisfying sexual activities help maintain in people a sound physical condition and good mood. This is because sex is a form of exercise that helps keep the heart healthy, promoting better blood circulation. As an exercise, it also works out the back and stomach muscles.

o    After a good sex, people tend to become more pleasant and loving. This is because of the release of hormones responsible for pleasant feelings of relaxation, love and affection.

Good sex also releases certain antibodies that helps boost our immune system and, as generally proven, a good stress-reliever.

Unless you take sex as one of those past times you indulge in sometimes, the value of sex in building long lasting relationships is priceless. Sexual health practitioners highly suggest that couples start looking at it from a different perspective and start communicating on how to spice up their sex lives. It can mean a lot. Studies show that couples with healthy sex lives tend to live longer than those who do not have.

Too Stressed to have Sex?

February 18th, 2011

Sign up for PayPal and start accepting credit card payments instantly.

Yes, sex is a stress-reliever. But oftentimes, people are so stressed that getting into the mood for sex is practically impossible. his becomes more common when people reach the middle age and midlife crisis sets in. Of course sex is not only the casualty of stress. It is the most common disease of modern man and every aspect of our lives. Stress can kill. So let’s deal with it by knowing what, precisely, is “stress.”

Stress is the response of people when faced with circumstances that force them to act, change, or adjust in some way to maintain their footing, their balance. This response, also known as fight-or-flight response can trigger many involuntary changes in our bodies including, among other things, a disinclination for sex. It can result to impotence, damaged relationships.

Setting the mood for sex when stressed out is difficult but it can be done. Besides, there is no getting around it. The following tips are useful to set things right, not only of your sex life but your entire life as well.

Talk to someone emotionally close to you:

Getting connected with others is a good way to relieve stress. Makes us realize that we are not alone in this world and that others are probably in far more worse situation than we are. A good conversation with someone close is all that it takes to find relief;

Have a good laugh:

There are times when we are so high-strung that no amount of humor can make us laugh. Ironically, finding a reason or circumstance to laugh is what is needed most when one is stressed out. Watching a funny TV feature or reading a humorous book will help.

Simplify:

More often than not, stress comes from expecting too much in life. Take a close look inside and assess your needs and wants. Start living according to your needs and get rid some of your wants. It won’t kill you. In fact you might even find life to be more stress-free and fulfilling.

Exercise:

Feel that knot in your neck muscles? Nothing beats sweating out to ease them up. Taking a walk or shadow boxing make wonders. And it gives you more energy to tackle the demands of your day. A good 20 mins, three times a day of simple basic exercise can make you fell more energized, have more positive hormones flow into your blood, making you feel a lot happier. Have you seen a happy person stressed out?

Eat well:

What you eat can make you feel energized and light or sluggish and stressed. A diet of vegetables, protein and whole foods can reduce stress, increase your energy levels and make you look and feel better – elements to whet your appetite for sex.

Have enough sleep:

Bad sleeping habits can affect your entire system and can make you feel more stressed, tired and sluggish. If evening sleep is insufficient, consider taking a nap. A mound of data is available supporting the benefits of a short nap after lunch.

Create the right atmosphere:

A quiet and relaxing evening, dimmed lights, soft music and a few candles should set things right. Throw away your cell phones and unhook the telephone to prevent any intrusion into your private moments. Aw shucks, you know the drill.

Go slow and easy:

Romance is not a hundred meter dash but a miler; not fast food but fine dining. A little suggestive conversation, a massage here and there to release pent-up tension and get you connected. Remember, sex is not a raid but a siege.

The above should help you over that stressed feeling. It may take some time to make your juices flowing but it is worth the effort. Denial, for whatever reason, can have very dire and lasting consequences with your relationship. Never entertain the idea that you are going downhill, sex-wise, due to age. Studies show that love and sex don’t evaporate with age. Being human, we still need to touch and be touched, to kiss, embrace and feel the joys of sex. Middle-aged people of today have been found out to be very much alive and kicking with regards to the passions of sex.

Habits to Make You Happy and Fit

February 1st, 2011

Dr. Derek Cox, Director of Public Health at Dumfries and Galloway NHS, is dumfounded by the results they are getting with their anti-smoking drive and death rates from smoking. Despite all their efforts people are still dying at the same rates.

He said, “We’ve spent years saying that giving up smoking could be the single most important thing that we could do for the health of the nation. And yet there is mounting evidence that happiness might be at least as powerful a predictor, if not a more powerful than some of the other lifestyle factors that we talk about in terms of cigarette smoking, diet, physical activity and those kind of things.”

One time I surfed google for “What makes man happy?” The results are varied but if you think it’s beer, sex, women, grilled meat (not necessarily in that order), think again. An informal poll of a diverse group of men, i.e., chefs, bottlewashers, stock brokers, musicians, bachelors and grand dads showed the following habits that make feel happy and healthy:

1.   Morning exercise:

This sets the day for the more grueling activities that lie ahead. It need not be the gym kind of exercise. A simple walk, sports or working outdoors is enough for most. Morning exercises have been loosely associated with positive mood and sustained energy through the day.

2.   Time to be alone:

A lot of men find this important for various reasons. I find early in the morning the best time to be grateful for my blessings. Others find it more creative to be alone; some to shut their minds off the world, while others to listen to the morning sounds of the birds and other creatures of nature.

3.   A night out with the boys:

It’s kind of rejuvenating to spend a night with the boys over some drinks, good conversation over a lot of nothings. Though some of the foods that come with it are not exactly healthy, but the friendship and camaraderie practically make up for the other unhealthy things that go into the stomach. Provided it is within limits. Coming home punch-drunk isn’t exactly the right formula for a happy and healthy life.

4.   A date with someone special:

This keeps you connected with the one you really care for in life. As a widower, this sorely I miss. Making it up with regular dinner with my children, though good enough, is not as good. Couples with regular night out schedules are found to argue and quarrel less and better equipped to resolve domestic tensions than those who don’t.

5.   Having a generous heart:

Making others happy is the highest form of happiness. Makes you experience complete bliss. Like when I and my daughter treated eight orphans to lunch early January. Though we do this every year but it never stops me from being awed watching these children, observing their varying eating habits and preferences while carrying the trauma of very painful childhood experiences.

6.   Getting down with a musical instrument:

This one I got to pass. I couldn’t play an instrument. Needless to say, I am envious of those who do. I wish I can make my fingers strum a guitar or run over a piano keyboard. People who do find this exercise a great stress-reliever.

7.   Quality time with family:

This need not be a vacation to the Cayman Island. Watching TV or a DVD with the family will suffice, provided the mood is relaxed, lines of communication are open. Time with family reinforces marriage bonds and good parenting.

Fitness, a Key to Happiness

January 30th, 2011

People are meant to be happy:

I am almost halfway through Rhonda Byrne’s book, The Secret. Needless to say, my life has been in an even keel since I started reading it to be able to attract positive vibrations from the Universe. Then all of a sudden, blam, Murphy’s Law descended upon me. Just about everything I did went wrong, even the cables of my computer. The Secret is about the law of attraction, a natural law like that of law of gravity, which is unerring, consistent and sure. But even that Murphy’s Law can screw things up like it did to me yesterday.

Anyway, this is not about what works and what do not. This is about how it affects us, physically and emotionally, when things go right or otherwise. We all know how it is to be stressed out, don’t we? Our pulse is running like a run-away train, our brains crash, we don’t know what to do, or, what to do next, if we do. We feel tired, ineffective, totally useless. And we tend to do a lot of things we think can alleviate the problem. Instead, it makes things worse. If stressed out for long periods of time, we go into depression.

Now switch gears and think of those days when you were relaxed, everything fell into their proper places and perspective and you felt like King Midas – everything you touched turned into virtual gold. You were so happy you felt like in the seventh Heaven, didn’t you? You felt  indestructible, capable of doing everything you put your mind into, didn’t you?

Happiness and fitness connection:

Now you know the connection between happiness and fitness. Now find out the relationship between these two things that should take hold of your life.

We generally feel happier after a brisk walk, jog, bike of other forms of physical activity. People with better physical appearance exude more self-confidence; a sense of accomplishment; exercise has been shown to improve the sleep patterns of the insomniacs. For an average person, good sleep always results after a good exercise.

Happiness and exercise boost the immune system and the release of endorphins, the body’s  stress-fighting hormones needed to trigger our natural fight or flight instincts. They cause the production of antibodies, those tiny little proteins produced by our immune system that protects us from antigens, i.e., bacteria, viruses and other unwanted agents that we take in daily from our environment and the food that we eat. These antibodies hunt these antigens, locked into them until our body’s T-cells, or killer cells come in for the kill.

Happiness has been shown to increase our antibodies by as much as 50 percent and that of exercise by 300 percent. It also lowers the body’s cortisol levels, a hormone that’s released when we are stressed. Too much of it weakens the body’s capability to fight off illnesses.

People who are happy are generally more resistant to diseases such as the common cold, and heart disease. They don’t fall victims to ravaging depression while those who are always stressed out are prone to have diabetes, depression and stroke.
